A Detroit Tradition: The Story of Joe Randazzo’s

The story of Joe Randazzo's began in 1953 with one man's determination, a used truck and a commitment to serving Detroit families.

The story of Joe Randazzo’s began with Giuseppe “Joe” Randazzo, a young man from Sicily who came to the United States in 1953 looking for opportunity.

What followed was not an overnight success. It was a business built one customer, one neighborhood and one load of produce at a time.

A New Beginning in Michigan

Joe arrived in the United States at age 26 and eventually settled in Michigan. He found work on the assembly line at Ford Motor Company in Wayne, joining many other immigrants and working families building new lives in Metro Detroit.

Joe saved enough money to purchase a used truck. He filled it with fruits and vegetables and began selling produce throughout Detroit.

The truck gave him a way to bring fresh food directly to neighborhoods and workers near the city’s auto plants. Customers came to know Joe for his selection, fair prices and personal service.

Those early routes became the foundation of the family business.

From a Produce Truck to a Detroit Market

In 1956, Joe opened his first fruit and vegetable market at Mound Road and Outer Drive in Detroit.

The store gave customers a permanent place to find the produce they had previously purchased from his truck. It also allowed Joe to serve more families while maintaining the value and straightforward service that helped him build a following.

As the business grew, its purpose remained clear: bring customers a broad produce selection at prices that helped families put more fresh food on the table.

Growing Alongside Metro Detroit

Joe Randazzo’s grew with the communities it served. The markets became familiar stops for shoppers preparing weeknight dinners, holiday meals and recipes passed down through their families.

That customer base reflected Metro Detroit itself. Different cultures and cooking traditions created demand for everyday staples as well as fruits, vegetables and pantry ingredients that could be harder to find elsewhere.

Over time, Joe Randazzo’s became more than a place to pick up apples or tomatoes. It became a market where shoppers could find ingredients connected to the way their families actually cooked.

A Family Business That Continues

Joe remained involved in the business throughout his life. When he passed away in 2015, he left behind a family tradition rooted in hard work, value and service.

Today, Joe Randazzo’s remains family-run. Its four markets serve Detroit, Dearborn Heights, Roseville and Westland, carrying the original business into a new generation.

The stores have changed and expanded since Joe first sold produce from his truck, but the heart of the business is still recognizable. Produce remains central. Families remain the focus. The market continues to reflect the communities around it.

More Than 70 Years of Market History

A great deal has changed in Metro Detroit since 1953. Neighborhoods have evolved, families have grown and the way people shop has shifted.

Still, the simple idea behind Joe’s first produce route remains relevant: give people a dependable place to find fresh food, useful variety and everyday value.

Every shopper who visits for a familiar ingredient, tries a new fruit or brings home produce for a family recipe becomes part of the story Joe started more than seven decades ago.

Visit Joe Randazzo’s in Detroit, Dearborn Heights, Roseville or Westland and experience a Metro Detroit market tradition that continues today.
